Obama’s pick for education secretary is Arne Duncan.

(CNN) — President-elect Barack Obama has selected Arne Duncan, the head of the Chicago public schools, to serve as Secretary of Education.

“When it comes to school reform, Arne is the most hands-on of hands-on practitioners. For Arne, school reform isn’t just a theory in a book – it’s the cause of his life. And the results aren’t just about test scores or statistics, but about whether our children are developing the skills they need to compete with any worker in the world for any job,” Obama said.

Cheney is praising Obama's new national security team.

Cheney is praising Obama’s new national security team.

(CNN) — President-elect Barack Obama’s national security team got an endorsement from an unlikely source Monday: Vice President Dick Cheney.

In an interview with ABC News, Cheney called the team — to be headed by Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton, National Security adviser Gen. Jim Jones, and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates — “pretty good.”

“I must say, I think it’s a pretty good team,” Cheney said in an interview that aired Tuesday morning. “I think the idea of keeping Gates at Defense is excellent. I think Jim Jones will be very, very effective as the national security adviser.”

“While I would not have hired Sen. Clinton, I think she’s tough,” he also said of Obama’s choice for secretary of state. “She’s smart, she works very hard and she may turn out to be just what President Obama needs.”

The comments come a day after Arizona Sen. John McCain also offered kind words for Obama’s national security team, saying it was a group of people he may have chosen himself.

But the seeming praise from high-profile Republicans over Obama’s national security team could further rile members of the liberal wing of the Democratic Party — the demographic that strongly supported Obama’s candidacy throughout the prolonged Democratic primaries.

“Some on the left say, ‘Wait a minute — we voted for change,'” CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider said.

Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton will meet with Barack Obama and President Bush for a private gathering in the Oval Office.

(CNN) –- Talk about a power lunch. President Bush, President-elect Barack Obama and three living former presidents will meet in the Oval Office for a private gathering on Wednesday afternoon.

Former presidents Jimmy Carter, George Herbert Walker Bush and Bill Clinton will join Obama and Bush at the White House for lunch. Obama initially came up with the idea that all of the men get together after meeting with President Bush last month.

White House Spokeswoman Dana Perino said the current and former leaders will gather for a photo op in the Rose Garden, but that their conversation and meal will be private. She said she doesn’t know what they will talk about, but she said she’d love to be able to hear it.

“I’m sure all of us would love to be flies on the wall and listening to that conversation,” Perino said during Tuesday’s daily press briefing. “These are leaders who only understand what it’s like to be in each others shoes and none of us can put ourselves in those shoes.”

Perino speculated that they will discuss what it’s like to raise children in the White House and how to protect them. She praised the Obamas for doing a good job with that so far and said they got their daughters to their first day of school on Monday “in good fashion.”

Perino said the last time all of the living presidents got together was in 1981, and called Wednesday’s meeting a “historic moment.”

Cheney swore in Biden to the Senate Tuesday.

Cheney swore in Biden to the Senate Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – The disputes over the Illinois and Minnesota Senate seats are stealing the spotlight, but there was other notable moments on Capitol Hill during today’s swearing in of the 111th Congress.

The most interesting picture of the day was Dick Cheney swearing in the man that will soon replace him as vice president, Joe Biden. As sitting vice president, Cheney presides over the Senate — and Biden is not only vice president-elect, but the newly re-elected senior senator from Delaware. He’ll give that position up come January 20, when he takes the vice presidential oath of office.

Two other senators who get sworn in today will most likely soon be stepping down as well. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York has been nominated by President-elect Barack Obama to serve as his secretary of state. And Sen. Ken Salazar of Colorado has been nominated by Obama to serve as secretary of the interior. Both will resign their seats if confirmed to their new positions, as expected, by the Senate.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — In an overlooked YouTube video posted on Friday, a spokesman for Barack Obama said the president-elect is committed to ending the policy that bars openly gay men and women from serving in the U.S. armed forces.

    Watch: ‘Don’t ask . . .’ may go

In a response to a question on the Web site Change.gov asking whether Obama would get rid of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said: “You don’t hear politicians give a one-word answer much. But it’s ‘Yes.'”

Gibbs on Wednesday expanded on his answer, saying, “There are many challenges facing our nation now and the president-elect is focused first and foremost on jump-starting this economy.

“So not everything will get done in the beginning but he’s committed to following through” with ending the policy against being openly gay in the military.

The incoming president and vice president will meet with the Supreme Court Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Continuing a growing tradition between incoming chief executives and the chief justice of the highest court in the land, President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden will visit the Supreme Court Wednesday afternoon.

The two will visit the high court in response to an invitation from Chief Justice John Roberts, who noted in a December 5 letter to Obama, a former constitutional law professor, that previous presidents-elect had visited the
Supreme Court before taking office as a courtesy “so that colleagues in public
    service might become better acquainted.”

“The Associate Justices and I would be pleased to see that sporadic practice become a congenial tradition,” said Roberts. “You will receive a warm welcome.”

Both Obama and Biden — while serving in the Senate — voted against Roberts as chief justice in 2005 and Justice Samuel Alito in early 2006.

Roberts will administer the presidential oath of office to Obama on January 20. Justice John Paul Stevens — the oldest member of the high court — will administer the vice presidential oath to Biden.

This is the third time in recent history, according to the Obama transition team, that a president-elect and vice president-elect have visited the Supreme Court. Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush visited the high court in November 1980. Bill Clinton and Al Gore visited the court in December 1992.

The previous meetings, however, were held at the suggestion of the incoming president. Roberts’ personal invitation represents a change in that precedent.
